What is a Californian?

The Californian breed was developed by George West. It was the result of cross breeding the Himalayan breed and the Standard Chinchilla breed. The rabbit was created to produce a good commercial meat rabbit.

The Californian's body type is of the commercial type. It is a plump, firm, and meaty rabbit. The color points ( ears, nose, feet, tail) on the Californian should be as dark black as possible and the white portion of the coat should be a pure snow white. Smut (black or gray fur) on any other area of the pelt is an automatic disqualification other than on the dulap, eyebrows and vent. The description of the body, is to be of medium length, with depth equal to width and full over and around the hips, with firm, meaty loin carried as full and meaty as possible to nape of neck and down sides over ribs and shoulders.

About Us

My husband and I decided to start this rabbitry as a family project. We value our time spent together as a family and knew that this was a venture that we would take together. Therefore, my husband, Joe, came up with our rabbitry name, 5N Rabbitry, after the five members of our family; Joe, Jennifer, Heaven, Grace and  Joseph Nelson.

Throughout my childhood years my family has raised and shown Californians so this wasn't a new experience for me.  We stumbled upon some of our old stock from years before and found that our children also had a love for rabbits.  We decided to turn our unused barn into a rabbit barn and start over with new stock.  We knew that we wanted to stay with the same line of rabbits that we were working with in our barn before so we called Mr. Al Roland in Virgina and had two trios sent our way.  We signed our daughters up for the American and Texas Rabbit Breeders Associations and the National and Texas Califorinan Specialty Clubs and started breeding right away.  I'm greatful to my parents who took many long nights and years of their time breeding Cals and teaching me about the breed because now as my daughters are beginning their show career we are not starting at square one.  My parents continue to help us in our rabbitry and we appriciate their input. My husband has quickly became familiar with Californians and is hooked liked the rest of us.  We only hope that we can be the positive influence and good teachers to our children that my parents were to me as a little girl.

Heaven and Grace havn't been showing very long and are already doing great at the shows.  We are very proud parents.  While visiting our website we want to talk to you about the Californian breed as well as get you acquainted with some of our own rabbits
